December 28th, 1898

C. W. Chapman died suddenly last week Wednesday, at his home in the north part of town, of heart disease. He was attacked in the afternoon at Hinshaw & Griswold’s store, was carried home and died a few hours later. He was a native of Connecticut, came to Winterset in 1865, was 79 years of age, a bachelor, and lived alone. He had no relatives nearer than St. Paul where a sister of his resides. He was badly crippled by a fall in Pitzer’s store many years ago while constructing an elevator, from which he never recovered. He funeral was held on Friday afternoon, Rev. A. Jacobs being the officiating clergyman.
