James Darrin Cox passed away on August 27, 2020 in Indianola, Iowa from injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 15 starting at 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Earlham Church of Christ in Earlham, Iowa. A Celebration of Life Service will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 16th at Earlham Church of Chris in Earlham, Iowa. Burial will immediately follow at the Earlham Cemetery.

Darrin’s Life Story

James Darrin Cox was born December 15, 1964 in Des Moines, Iowa to Mary E. (Brown) & Coy “Rex” Cox. He lived in Booneville, Iowa attending Van Meter Community School in Van Meter, Iowa. Darrin graduated in 1983 where he served as senior class president. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp rising to the rank of Corporal. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton where he trained to become a diesel mechanic. During his service, he spent time overseas visiting places such as the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Greenland and Australia. He was honorably discharged from the Marines in 1989 after serving four years active duty and two years in the reserves.

Following his discharge from the Marine Corps, Darrin was united in marriage to Denise Witt on June 25, 1988. Together they were blessed with two beautiful children, Camryn and Caitlyn. Darrin worked for several years as a small business owner operating his own automotive repair shop. In recent years, Darrin worked as a truck driver both locally and regionally. Most recently, Darrin worked for ABC Supply Co. in Waukee, IA. He enjoyed his job very much and spoke often of the fun he had with his coworkers.

As a child, Darrin loved to help his mother cook and enjoyed being in the kitchen. He was very close with his grandpa Coy and loved spending time with him and his grandma Pauline playing cards. He liked spending time with his uncles at his grandpa Tom and grandma Matilda’s working on old cars, joking around, and talked of the fun they always had together. Darrin was mischievous in his high school years and always seemed to be involved in playing pranks on teachers and close friends. Darrin learned a lot about working on cars from his dad and uncles in his young adult years. He enjoyed fishing at area ponds with his brother, and making his sister and everyone laugh in general, as he was fun to be around. He reminisced about times spent with family often in recent months.

Darrin was a funny, kind, loving man who enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially at the many bonfires he hosted at home. He enjoyed playing a mean game of canasta on Saturday evenings with his wife, mother-in-law and father-in-law. He especially loved his two children, Camryn and Caitlyn. They made memories as a family boating and fishing with the many friends of his children whom he also considered family. Darrin enjoyed cooking and had an admiration and love for old cars. He also enjoyed driving and often took road trips whenever the mood struck him. He loved his dogs and had a soft spot for animals and wildlife, making sure he avoided hurting any that crossed his path.

Darrin was an ordained minister through the Universal Life Church. He was very meticulous about his appearance, standing tall and proud to be a Marine Corps veteran. He always wore a United States Marines cap and was acknowledged frequently by strangers thanking him for his service. No matter where he was, he always took the time to speak to them and shake their hand.

Darrin was preceded in death by his father, Coy “Rex” Cox; grandparents Coy and Pauline Cox and Ferrell “Tom” L. and Matilda Brown; father and mother-in-law, Harold and Rosalie Witt.

Darrin’s memory will be cherished by his wife, Denise of Redfield, Iowa; their two children, Camryn (Shelby Groenhoff) of Dexter, Iowa and Caitlyn (Brody Willrich) of Earlham, Iowa; his mother, Mary E. Cox of Booneville, Iowa; his brother Rob (Teresa) Cox and niece Hailey of Colfax, Iowa; his sister, Angela Riesenberg of Overland Park, Kansas; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

In appreciation for your attendance and support, the family invites you to a luncheon after the service at the Earlham Community Building to visit and share your memories of Darrin.
