Page 1Dr. Charles Melvin Wallace, for 27 years a practicing physician in Madison county, died suddenly at his home near Winterset last Friday night, the victim of heart disease.
Dr. Wallace survived by only a few days his return from an extended motor trip where he had been visiting his daughter, Mrs. Eva Pindell.
Dr. Wallace was a native of Bedford, Iowa, where he was born January 8, 1871, the son Isaac and Mary Wallace. His public school education was received there. Later he moved to New Market (Iowa) where he married Mary Helen Parson and where his two children were born. His next home was at Gravity (Iowa) where he clerked in a drug store.
While living at Gravity, at the age of 32, and with a family to care for, he began the study of medicine at St. Joseph, Missouri and started practicing at Persia, Iowa, and St. Joseph.
In 1908, Dr. Wallace opened offices in Macksburg and the family lived there for many years. Mrs. Wallace died there in 1916. In 1920 the doctor opened an office in Winterset in conjunction with his son-in-law, Dr. Merl Pindell. He continued his practice here until his death.
Dr. Wallace was affiliated with four lodges, the Masons, Royal Neighbors, Modern Woodmen of America and Shrine. He joined the Baptist church at the age of 19, but five years ago transferred his membership to the M.E. church here.
The deceased is survived by two children, Guy Wallace of near Winterset and Mrs. Eva Pindell of South Pasadena, California; four grandsons, Chester, Russell and Victor Wallace of near Winterset, and Wallace Pindell of California; three brothers, Frank Wallace of Winterset, L. D. Wallace of De Soto (Iowa) and Robert Wallace of Gravity (Iowa).
Funeral services were held Wednesday from the Methodist church in Winterset. The rites were conducted by the Rev. W. W. Bentsinger, Methodist pastor, assisted by the Rev. H. L. Olmsted of the Church of Christ. Burial was made at Macksburg.
