Gretchen Isenberg, 78, of the Mayflower Community in Grinnell, died on June 27, 2020, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

A graveside service and burial are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 3rd, at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell with Rev. John Epperson of Grinnell, officiating.

Visitation with the Isenberg family present will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

The Isenberg family are asking family and friends to please wear a mask at the visitation.

Memorial contributions may be designated to the Grinnell United Methodist Church or Hillcrest Family Services in Dubuque.

Gretchen was born on February 16, 1942, in Dexter, Iowa, the daughter of Graham W. and Pauline Evans Godby. She was raised on her family farm near Dexter and was a 1960 graduate of Earlham High School. She later received her BA from the University of Iowa in 1964.

On September 5, 1964, she was united in marriage to Kenneth L. Isenberg, in Earlham. The couple moved to Grinnell where Gretchen was employed at Family Dentistry as a dental hygienist for 36 years. She retired in 2000.

Gretchen was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, Patient Care Committee at Grinnell Regional Hospital, where she was a long-time volunteer, and the Glitzy Gals Red Hat Society. She was also an active member of the Grinnell Lady Elks, PEO Chapter BM, and Phi Rho Lamba. She enjoyed reading and was an avid University of Iowa Hawkeyes fan.

She is survived by her two sons, Jeffrey S. Isenberg of Longmont, Colorado and Thomas R. (Kathi) Isenberg of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Jensen and Emma Hastings and Hayden Isenberg; one great-grandchild, Keanu Goodwin; a sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Hampton of Scottsdale, Arizona; and several cousins, Robert Gist and his wife, Jill of Boughton North Hampton, United Kingdom, Mary (Godby) Ray and her husband, Jim of Lincoln, Nebraska and Jan Godby of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ken in 2007; and a stillbirth daughter in 1969.
