Tim was born on November 16, 1952 to Vernon and Dorothy (Julius) Hartman in Epworth, Iowa. The family later moved to Des Moines where he attended Christ the King School and later Dowling High School graduating with the Class of 1971. Following graduation he attended DMACC. Tim enlisted in the National Guard serving as an M.P while also working at Gilcrest-Jewett. Beginning in 1975, Tim started his career with the Des Moines Fire Department where he served for 35 years retiring as a Captain.

On June 7, 1980 Tim was united in marriage to Stephanie Sparks. To this union three children were born: Timothy, Katie and Mollie. The couple made their home in Des Moines before later moving to their acreage north of Earlham in 1984. Tim was an active member of the Des Moines Power Boat Club, founding member of the Des Moines Water Emergency Team, an instructor for the Midwest Regional Water Safety Council, an instructor for SWIFT Water Rescue and a member of the Dexter American Legion Post 419. He loved boating and being out on the water especially the family cabin on the Mississippi River near Burlington. Tim enjoyed duck hunting, playing music, singing and woodworking. Most of all, Tim treasured time he was able to spend with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Dorothy Hartman.
