Mrs. John F. Gutz, age 92, who has been a Winterset resident for the past 14 years, died at the Madison county Memorial hospital, last Thursday morning, July 11th, after a two weeks illness. The former Angie Eppler, she was a daughter of Peter and Augusta Eppler, and was born at Cayuga, Illinios April 18, 1876.
She went to Pomeroy, Iowa, when a young lady, and was married at Pontiac, Illinois, to John F. Gutz, June 15, 1897. They made their home in Pomeroy, where they raised five children. In addition to her education in Illinois schools she attended a special art school.
She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1952, and two daughters, Miss Phyllis Gutz, and Mrs. Marian Eldridge, who died in Ames. She moved to Winterset, shortly after her husband's death and has resided at 620 West Filmore since then.
She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran church in Pomeroy, but after coming to Winterset, she attended the Trinity Lutheran church in Jefferson township. The pastor at Trinity Lutheran, the Rev. E.A. Breiholz, conducted her funeral services at the Immanuel Lutheran church, in Pomeroy Saturday, July 13th, a 2 o'clock, and burial was made in the Pomeroy cemetery. He was assisted by the Rev. Luther S. Herman, pastor of Immanuel church.
Mrs. Gutz was active in several social groups in Winterset. She is survived by one son, Eppler Gutz of Hampton, and two daughters, Mrs. Edward (Lorraine) Baur of Jefferson township, and (Sally) Mrs. Audra Gibbs of Greenfield. Also surviving are ten grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and one brother, Ben F. Eppler, of Santa Cruz, Calif.
