C. A. MARVIN DIED – APOPLECTIC STROKE

Falls Dead from Chair While Talking to his Daughter. U. S. Expressman for many Years

C. A. Marvin, for many years United States Express Company agent in Winterset dropped dead in his apartments over the Johnston bakery Saturday afternoon about four o’clock. He was talking to his daughter, Mrs. Farlow, and pitched out of his chair to the floor and died in a few moments. He had been out on the street not an hour before. He has been in feeble health for several years.

Mr. Marvin was 74 years old, coming to Winterset in 1888 from Des Moines to take charge of the United States Express Company’s office which was then on the west side. He was at that time an old employee of the company and the Winterset job was given him in recognition of his services.

He was a member of the city council for several years and took great pride in the city. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was one of the best liked men of Winterset in his active life.

He is survived by his wife, his two sons, Don, of Minneapolis, Ray, of Chicago; Mrs. Nellie Gemricher, of Polk City; Mrs. Mabel Kurtz, of Clive; Mrs. Pearl Farlow, of Winterset and six grandchildren.

Funeral services with the Masonic ceremony, were held Monday afternoon at the Baptist church, Rev. D. J. Shenton officiating. The body was taken to the Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines Tuesday morning for interment.

C. A. Marvin

Clayton Alfonzo Marvin was born at Ortonville, Mich., Jan.31, 1849 and died at his home in Winterset, Feb. 17, 1923, at the age of 74 years and 17 days. He moved to Iowa with his parents in the year 1856 and settled at La Grande, Marshall county. In early manhood he moved to Des Moines.

On October 19, 1871 he was united in marriage to Harriet B. Coffin of Tama county. To this union were born six children: Charles H., Who died in infancy, and Nellie M., Mabel M., Don A., Ray R., and Pearl L., all of whom survive.

Mr. Marvin began working for the U. S. Express company at Des Moines in the year 1877. In 1888 he removed to Winterset, where he continued in their employ until 1920, when he retired because of ill health. His record of 43 years of faithful service for the U. S. Express company is one that is rarely equaled and speaks for itself of the man, and his values to his employers.

He was a member of Evening Star Lodge, No. 43, A. F. & A. M.

He leaves to mourn his loss a loving and devoted wife, three daughters, two sons, seven grandchildren and one brother, Fred W., of Colton,.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon in the Baptist church conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton. The body was taken to Des Moines for burial on Tuesday morning.
