Maurice Roach, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Roach, was born June 5, 1888 and died February 4, 1923 at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
The many friends and relatives of Maurice Roach were shocked when the sudden news came early Sunday morning from Des Moines that he died at midnight Saturday.
Maurice Roach was born and raised on a farm in Madison county where he lived with his parents at the time of his death. He was one of Madison county’s most respected men and the great throng with tear dimmed eyes passed one by one and took the last long look at the one they loved and cherished during life. Though it was with great sorrow that they laid him in his last resting place. They will in years to come cherish his memory and never will be forgotten by those who he mingled with during his short life here upon this earth. His only thought was to do and help others. Those kind thoughts and deeds have gone before him to the throne of God. He is enjoying the fruits of his good works and deeds which he so willingly and patiently done on this earth.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Patrick’s church. Requiem high mass was celebrated by his uncle, Rev. D. F. Mulvihill of Des Moines who in a few short words paid a high tribute to the young man who as he said was called in the bloom of life. It was God’s will and we must not question it.
Pallbearers were all lifelong chums of his, John Ryan, John Kirvin, James Horn, Peter Tiernan, John McLaughlin, James Lynch, Pat Breen, and John Kiernan. Interment was made in St. Patrick’s cemetery.
He is survived by his father, mother, one sister, Della at home, two sisters of Adair, Mrs. A. V. Hanley and Mrs. T. Walsh, of Des Moines, three brothers, Martin of Bevington; John of Boston, and Dan of San Francisco.
