The family moved to a farm near Earlham, Iowa, when she was small and she attended her first eight grades of school in a one-room schoolhouse. She attended Redfield High School, graduating in 1942. Velma taught five years in a one-room country school before her marriage to Rollin Bruce Barnett on December 28, 1947. Rollin and Velma lived six years near Cambridge, Iowa, and then moved to the Earlham, Iowa area where they farmed until retirement in 1991. This union was blessed with four daughters: Shirley, Sheryl, Sharla, and Sheila. After the girls were all in school, Velma was a substitute teacher for thirty-five years.

Following their retirement, Velma and Rollin moved to Salem, Oregon to be closer to family in Oregon and Washington. Velma was always a member of the Friends Church, where she taught Sunday School and served on various committees. She was a church pianist for many years. Velma and Rollin spent several winters in Arizona, where they made many new friends. She loved flowers and had a beautiful yard in Oregon. She also had many hobbies and interests including sewing, quilting, crossword puzzles, and reading. Velma loved her family and was always happy when they all came home for the Holidays or just a visit. She was an excellent cook, famous for making pies of all kinds. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
