Obituary

Josephus Smith was born Dec. 12, 1800 in New Haven, county, Conn., and died Dec 17, 1889, in Madison county, Iowa, age 89 years and 5 days.

He was conscious to the last, and died after but a few days of illness, though he had been afflicted with rheumatism for over 30 years, which made him a cripple. During the last eight years he had to walk with crutches. He has been a hearty and robust man who has endured all the hardships and privations of frontier life. He went west to Ohio when only 18 or 19. In 1839 to Linn county, Iowa, and in 1876 to Madison county. He also in 1852 made a journey to the gold fields of California. No wonder his iron constitution had to endure the results of rheumatism.

He was a cheerful and honest man, a great reader with a wonderful memory. He was married twice. The first wife died in 1856, the second in 1882. Of five children, two, O. H. and Stephen, remain to mourn his departure. The funeral was attended by a large concourse of people. Services by S. Krell.
