Winterset Madisonian, 06 July 1876

Mary A. Darnell (nee Bishop) wife of G. H. Darnell, of Ohio township, committed suicide by hanging herself until dead. She, it appears, had pre-arranged the fatal act. She took a cotton cord, went to the smoke house near by, took a stool to stand upon, then fastened the cord around her neck and a pole about six feet above the ground, her feet still touching the stool when found. This occurred between 2 and 3 o'clock, p. m., of June 27, 1876, and she was not discovered until after 4 o'clock of the same evening, when she was cold and stiff in death. The cause which prompted her to this rash act is unknown. The deceased was about 50 years old, and was a kind affectionate Christian woman, was a member of the Baptist church and had been for a number of years. She was beloved by all her neighbors Her loss will be severely felt by the neighborhood. An inquest was held before S. C. Ellis, J. P., (In absence of a coroner) which elicited the facts as to her death as above stated, and for which acts we are indebted to Mr. Ellis.
