LEO PERCIVAL DIES OF HEART ATTACK

Former County Attorney Had Practiced Law Here 38 Years

Friends and acquaintances throughout Madison County were shocked last Thursday by the sudden death of Leo C. Percival, former county attorney and a practicing lawyer in Winterset for 38 years.

Mr. Percival's health was delicate for a number of years, but he had continued at his law practice and his many other community responsibilities. His death came suddenly of a heart attack, and occurred at his home on West Jefferson street. He was 63 years of age.

Mr. Percival was born at Hillsboro on May 13, 1875, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Newell Percival. He was educated in the law school of Washington university at St. Louie and came to Winterset in 1901 to enter the practice of law.

He was married, on April 22, 1906, to Miss Mabel Graham of Winterset. He was a Republican in politics and became one of the most influential members of that party in Madison County. He was elected county attorney in 1906, and served from 1907 through 1910. He was again elected to that office in 1920, and served from 1921 through 1924. He united with the Methodist church here in 1906, and for the remainder of his life he devoted much time to Sunday school and Bible school work. He became one of the trustees of the church, and at the time of his death, was treasurer of the Ruby Fund.

In 1904 he was received into the Masonic lodge here, and later became a shriner. He was also a member of the Woodman fraternity and the Easter Star. He served as worshipful master, worthy patron past master and grand worthy patron. To all of these organizations he gave a great deal of time and work. Recently he had completed the revision of the code for the Eastern Star.

His near surviving relatives are his wife; and two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Craig of Salem and Mrs. Agnes Moyle of Hillsboro.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Methodist church, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. J. R. McNichols, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

The pall bearers were C. R. Peters, R. O. Mills, J. W. McKee, Myles Young, V, M. Ritter and E. R. Tompkins.
