Jerald M. "Jerry" Boyle, 65, Lorimor, Dies

Jerald M. "Jerry" Boyle was born was born Jan. 25, 1940 in Madison County. He was the third child of Jesse Maurice Boyle and Lela Samantha Willison Boyle. He died Feb. 14, 2005 at his home in rural Union County after a lengthy illness with multiple myeloma.

He attended country school in Madison County through the fourth grade and then attended Earlham Elementary and High School where he graduated with the class of 1958.

He farmed in Madison County most of his life, first at his father's side, then on his own. He found time through the years to own and operate the Minneapolis Moline Implement dealership in Dallas Center and participate in numerous cattle and farm-related organizations.

In the early 1960s he abandoned "Pigs," his father's love and after extensive research of different cattle breeds, he chose Limousin. He developed a registered herd and became known throughout the states and Canada. He encouraged his children to share his love of cattle and they followed in the show ring.

He proudly referred to himself as a "Yellow Dog Democrat" and delighted in the political rhetoric of the day. In the 1970s he became an activist and helped carry the torch of the ag movement to the floor of Congress in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Boyle was an avid reader and a scholar of ancient history and religion. He embraced living with a passion and was interested in everything and everyone. He was proud of his Irish heritage and fascinated with "Irish Ways."

He was preceded in death by his parents, sons, Brian Kelley Boyle and Keith Michael Boyle and his first wife, Verla Jean York.

Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Ava Lea Forbes Boyle; daughter Susan Ramsey and husband Murray of Earlham; daughter Beth Crouch and husband Earl of Des Moines; son Lynn Boyle and wife Darla of Dexter; son Dennis Edwards and wife Liz of Macksburg, daughter Linda Hennigar and husband Randy of Greenfield; sister Nancy Malmquist and husband John of Boxholm, sister Coleen Hayes and husband Franklin of Urbandale; brother Robert Boyle and wife Marilyn of Dexter; grandchildren, Olivia and Luke Ramsey of Earlham, Gunner Crouch of Des Moines, Nathan, Sydney, Peyton, Addison and Kirsten Boyle of Dexter, Victor and Justine Edwards of Macksburg, Jennifer and Molly Hennigar of Greenfield, Veronica and Victoria Crouch of Des Moines, aunts Dorothy Fines of Clearwater, Fla., Gail Willison of West Des Moines and Mildred Willison of Des Moines, nieces, nephews and friends.

At his request his remains will be buried at a later date with his sons at the Penn Center Cemetery in Madison County.

A memorial gathering was held in the Earlham Legion Hall in Earlham on Sunday, Feb. 27. Memorials may be directed to the Keith Boyle Scholarship Fund at Earlham Savings Bank.
