Death of John Ballard.

DIED, Friday, December 6th, 1889, John C. Ballard, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Ballard, aged 18 years.

When it was reported about town last Saturday morning that John Ballard had died the night before the general grief was increased by the fact of its suddenness, few having known that he was seriously ill. For a few weeks he had been afflicted with goitre, or swelling of the glands of the throat, but it was not until a day or two of his death that the true nature of the disease was understood and his parents be-came alarmed. Friday evening he seemed so much better, that at his request the family all retired and the lights were put out. At a little before eleven he came to his parents’ room and told his father that he could not breathe and that he would better I go for the doctor. Mr. Ballard went at once for Dr. Davisson, but failed to find him for a time, as he was at the Masonic lodge. When he arrived John was beyond all mortal aid.

The funeral services were held at the home last Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Dr. H. M. Robertson, late pastor of the Winterset Presbyterian church, of which the deceased and his parents were members. A. very large number of friends and neighbors were present including the I members of John's class in the high I school, who attended in a body.

John was an affectionate and dutiful son and among his young friends and school-mates, his cheerful, kindly disposition made him an especial favorite, He would have graduated with the present senior class in the high school, and intended to go to college next year. He was the only child In his parent’s home, the eldest son, a young man of much promise, having died several years ago, and the second, Wm. E. Ballard, residing in Des Moines. So far as the sympathy of a host of friends can help to alleviate an affliction Mr. and Mrs. Ballard will have it in abundance.
