Funeral services were held at the Van Meter Methodist church Friday for J. Max Gutshall, 57, a life-long resident of the community. He passed away in a Des Moines hospital Tuesday following an illness of many weeks.

Jacob Max Gutshall, son of Harry and Minnie Gutshall, was born October 24, 1896, at Van Meter and departed this life January 20, 1953, after a short illness at the hospital in Des Moines, at the age of 56 years, 4 months and 4 days.

On November 4, 1914 he was united in marriage to Marguerite Griffith, and to this union five children were born. One son, Robert Eugene, died in infancy.

He received his education at the Van Meter high school and Leander Clark college at Toledo, Iowa, and has been engaged in farming in Van Meter Township since 1915. The past seven years he has been in partnership with his three sons.

He was a member of the Van Meter Methodist church; a member of the School Board of Van Meter Cons. School and an active member of the PMA. He has acted as chairman of the Dallas Co. Soil Conservation program for the past year, and has been a member of the Commissary group that was instrumental in creating the present organization.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Marguerite, a daughter, Gretchen; three sons, Wayne, Carroll and Paul, five grandchildren, two sisters, Clara Gutshall and Vivian Reese and other relatives and many friends. His father, mother and one sister, Mrs. Gertrude Hague, preceded him in death.

Rev. Aldreth V. Weigel was pastor in charge of funeral services at the church. Mr. Ronald Phillips sang “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “The Lord’s Prayer”, accompanied by Mrs. A. G. Felter at the organ.

Casket bearers were Roy Clayton, John Jungman, Harold Moore, Ted Forret, Ralph Jennings and Carl Radke. Mr. and Mrs. John England and Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Phillips helped care for the many beautiful floral contributions.
