MRS. JERRY WILSON CALLED BY DEATH

Resident of County Since 1860 - Member of Pioneer Family - One of Early Teachers of Madison County - Wilson Home Widely Known For Its Hospitality.

Mrs. Laura M Wilson, a resident of the county since 1860, died at her home in Winterset September 23, shortly after noon, at the age of eighty-three years. She had been ill for several months and for some time her condition had been considered very serious.

Mrs. Wilson was a member of the well-known John Darby family, which came to Winterset in 1855. Later the family settled on Cedar in Union Township, and in 1858 Mr. Darby what the section of land in Penn township where he lived until his death. Mrs. Wilson joined her family here in 1860, coming to Iowa from Holmes county, Ohio. Her marriage to Jerry Wilson occurred in 1869.

Mr. Darby was an ardent abolitionist and his home was a station on the underground railway over which many negroes passed on their way to freedom in the north. Mrs. Wilson lived in the stirring days of the Civil war and always maintained an interest in affairs of her country. She was one of the early teachers of the county.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Wilson were widely known. They lived until Mr. Wilson’s death in 1910, on the home farm in Adair county, where there far-reaching hospitality was extended to many. They were among the most popular and most prominent of the early residents of the county.

Short funeral services were held in Winterset Saturday, conducted by the Rev. D. J. Shenton, of the Methodist church. Longer services were conducted at the Macksburg church later the afternoon by the Rev. Shenton and interment was made in the old family burying ground on the home farm.

Mrs. Wilson is survived by her sons, Eugene Wilson, cashier of the Macksburg National bank, and Clarence Wilson, of Alamosa, Colorado; her daughters, Mrs. Sybil Marsh, of Chanute, Kansas; Mrs. Mayme Walker, who lives on the old home farm.
