Ivan Rolland McKirgan, 80, died Thursday, December 9, 2004 near his daughter's home at the Loring Care Center in Sac City, Sac County, IA. The son of Charles Darrah McKirgan and Bertha Delia (Kitt) McKirgan, Ivan was born on October 11, 1924 in St. Charles, Madison County, IA. He was the youngest of six children. His siblings included Vera Eva McKirgan Butler (1906-1963), Mabel Lucile McKirgan Berry (1907- present) of Des Moines. Carl Lloyd McKirgan (1911-1989), Blanche Irma McKirgan Anderson (1914-2003), and Geraldine Ruth McKirgan Quelland (1922-present) of Tulsa, OK.

On October 4, 1958, Ivan and Henrietta Spurgin were wed at the Forest Avenue Baptist Church in Des Moines, Polk County, IA. Craig Charles McKirgan and Kay Lynn McKirgan were Ivan and Henrietta's only children. Henrietta preceded Ivan in death on July 3, 2000, also at the age of 80 years.

Surviving are his son, Craig C. McKirgan, his wife Janie, and their two children Scott Alexander McKirgan and Kylie Elizabeth McKirgan of Indiana, PA. Also surviving are his daughter, Kay Lynn (McKirgan) Crabb, her husband Steve Crabb and their two sons Connor Charles Crabb and Nicholas Lyle Crabb of Nemaha, IA.

Ivan grew up in Indianola, IA and graduated from Indianola High School in 1942. He briefly attended Simpson College before enlisting in the US Army Air Force. He was a member of the basketball, track and field teams at both institutions. During WWII he served as a sergeant on 26 missions as a tail gunner on a B-24 bomber based out of Italy. He earned five Battle Stars, the Air Medal, two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Good Conduct Medal.

After WWII, he returned to Des Moines and eventually spent the majority of his employment with Iowa Donut Supply Company as an inventory control officer. Socially Ivan was involved in various organizations including Flying Arrow Saddle Club, Merle Hay Neighborhood Association, American Quarter Horse Association, Des Moines Recreational Softball League, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 09127, Hoover High School Boosters, and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Des Moines.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, December 12 at Westover Funeral Home on Hickman Road in Des Moines. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 13 the First United Methodist Church in Des Moines, with internment to follow at Glendale Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to First United Methodist Church of Des Moines.
