John Peter Herman Jurgensen, oldest child of Carl and Maria Jurgensen, was born in Schleswig, Germany, January 4, 1889, and died July 20, 1965 at Elm Crest Nursing Home in Des Moines.

At the age of 16 he came to the United States and settled in Boone County. Later he lived in Madison and Dallas county where he was engaged in farming and masonry.

November 11, 1909, he was united in marriage to Dorathy Thomsen. To this union six children were born, Henry of Downey, Cal., Marianna Secrest, Audrey Paullin of Stuart, and Florine Quinn of Rock Island, Ill., and two deceased sons, Paul and Raymond.

On March 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to Eva Starr. He was employed for ten years as shipping clerk for International Harvester in Des Moines.

He was a great lover of music and was a member of the Lutheran Trinity Church at Van Meter. He will be remembered in Van Meter, DeSoto and Minburn for his accordion playing and instrumental playing at band concerts.

He had been in failing health the last few years of his life.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister Anna, brother Gus, and two sons.

He is survived by his wife, children, 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, step-daughters, Marjorie Artuskeshe of Arcadia, Calif., Muriel Gott of Des Moines, step-son Harry Starr of Chicago, Ill., 9 step grandchildren, sister Martha Kast of St. Paul, Minn., and brother Gerhart Jurgensen of DeSoto, Ia., nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held July 22 at Fisher Funeral Home at Van Meter with Rev. E. A. Breiholz of Lutheran Church officiating. Organist was Mrs. Lee Hubbard. Casket bearers were Joseph Boos, J. G. Jensen, R. H. Hoch, Fred B. Martens, Herman Jensen and W. E. Martens. Interment was in Lutheran Cemetery at Van Meter.
