Services for John L. Ackelson, 82, of 524 S.W. Hughes Ave. will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at McLaren's Resthaven Chapel. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery.
Mr. Ackelson died of cancer Saturday at West Park Care Center, 1211 Vine St., West Des Moines.
A native of Winterset, he lived most of his life in Des Moines. A retired mechanic for the Metropolitan Transit Authority, he was a member of International Association of Machinist and Auto Workers Local 479 and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.
He is survived by a daughter, Janice Ballard of Des Moines; three sons, Alfred L., Allan N. and Tom, all of Des Moines; a brother, Leo of Knoxville; two sisters, Edna Wilkinson and Verdie Ackelson, both of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends may call until 9 tonight at the funeral home.
