August 2019Althea Housman, 98, passed away August 22, 2019, at her home in Winterset.
A visitation will be held 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Tuesday August 27, 2019 at Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home, Winterset Chapel, with family receiving friends during this time. A funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday. Burial will follow in the Montpelier Cemetery, Madison County. Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation. Agnes Althea Hathaway was born July 8, 1921 in Tingley, Iowa, one of twelve children born to Eljay and Mary Jane Carvey Hathaway. Althea married Floyd Housman on February 20, 1940 in Creston, Iowa and to this union three children were born.
Althea was an avid gardener and loved her flowers. She worked as clerk for Schusters and Flannery Pharmacy and as a nurse’s aide at the Madison County Memorial Hospital for 16 years. She was also a member of the Winterset Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for many years.
Surviving are a son, Terry Housman; a sister, Sylvia Petersen; five grandchildren, Rhonda Fleming, David Mapes, Brian Mapes, Ron G. Mapes and Alicia Berry; 13 great-grandchildren; 26 great great- grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband; a daughter, Sondra Mapes; a son, Ron Housman; five sisters, Isobel Griswold, Ruth Evans, Edith Nicholl, Rose Stuart and Flo Terry; four brothers, Murry (Bob), Harold, Charles and Harlin Hathaway.
