Former Winterset Druggist Died at Milwaukee SundayA. Nelson Smith, former Winterset druggist, died Sunday, February 7th, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Colonel and Mrs. James B. Bennett of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the age of 75 years. Mr. Smith had been in frail health for several months, but with his wife, had gone to Milwaukee, to reside, only a few weeks ago and he became critically ill, several hours prior to his death.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Smith are natives of Winterset. He owned and operated the Smith Drug company here from 1913-1931. For the past 15 years the family has resided in Sac City, and two years ago, he was honored for having been an Iowa pharmacist for 50 years.
Ambrose Nelson Smith, a son of Mathias J. and Mary Elizabeth Rogan Smith, was born in this community June 5, 1878. His mother died when he was young and the father later married Dr. Jessie V. Smith, well known Winterset doctor.
On October 11, 1911, Mr. Smith was married to Miss Lillian Miles, and they resided in Winterset, until they moved to Sac City. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset, and funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J.J. Judge, here on Wednesday morning, at 9 a.m. and burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, and their three children: Mary Elizabeth (Mrs. Robert) Schmidt of Evanston, Illinois, Mrs. Isabel Bennett of Milwaukee, and Nelson Smith Jr. of Park Forest, Illinois. He also leaves four grandchildren, Nancy Ann Barker and Christopher Schmidt of Evanston, and Bruce Barten and James Bryant Bennett of Milwaukee. He also leaves a half sister, Mrs. Catherine Danforth of Key Largo, Florida. Two sisters preceded him in death, Mrs. E.D. Harley of Winterset, who died January 26th, and Mrs. DeWitt Bass, also of Winterset, who died several years ago.
