105-year-old dies

CONRAD—Mrs. Ross (Glen) Mayer, 105, died Friday at a Conrad nursing home. Mrs. Mayer had been a resident of the nursing home for the past year, living until she was nearly 104 on her family’s homestead on the Teton River near Brady.

Glen Herren was born in Adair County, Iowa, the youngest in a family of 11 children. She and Ross Mayer were married at Macksburg, Iowa in March 1902.

They came to Montana in 1909, lived for a time at Huntley and then came to Augusta where he worked four years for the Salee Ranch. In 1915 the couple homesteaded in the Collins area and later moved to a farm south of Brady, on the Teton River.

During an interview on her 100th birthday, Mrs. Ross recalled that Collins was a thriving community at one time, with the railroad as its lifeline. When a trip into Great Falls by Model T could take all day, it was more convenient to get to town on the train.

During their years of farming and ranching, the Mayers raised sheep and then cattle. After her husband died in 1951, Mrs. Mayer and a family friend and farm hand Albert Leslie continued to operate the farm, growing grain. She moved into the Pondera Pioneer Nursing Home at Conrad in March 1981.

Mrs. Mayer was a 50-year member of the Victory Chapter Order of Eastern Star.

Her husband, an infant son, and her daughter, Mrs. John (Geraldine) Harkins, all preceded her in death. Surviving is a nephew, Cleve Ross, in Lethbridge, Alta.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in Hillcrest Lawn Memorial Chapel. Entombment will follow. Arrangements are being made by Wyse Funeral Home in Conrad.
