Afton Man Dies, Burial on Sunday

AFTON—Vern W. Welty, 53, a resident of Afton since 1941, died in University hospital at Iowa City Thursday. He had been ill for more than three years.

Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church here at 2 p.m. Sunday. Rev. John Nye will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery.

He was born in Madison county, March 13, 1895, the son of Manuel and Liza Welty. He spent his boyhood in Madison county and entered the army in World War I to serve in France and Germany with Company I of the 7th Infantry, 3rd Division. He was discharged in 1919.

He was married to Nellie Marie Porter, February 10, 1920, and they operated a farm near Ellston until ill health forced his retirement in 1939.

Surviving are his widow; a daughter, Florence Mae Owens of Afton; a grandson; and a brother E. Welty of Sioux City.
