Ethel Edna See Collins

Ethel Edna See Collins was born in Peru, Iowa on August 2, 1881, 97 years ago. She was one of seven children born to John Harvey See and Emma Mabel Emmerson See. At the age of 12 she was baptized into the Seventh-Day Adventist Church by Pastor Washburn, in the Des Moines River. On September 26, 1900, she married Betrand Collins in Dexter, Iowa. Since they both shared a pioneer spirit, they homesteaded in South Dakota. Both shared a deep love for music, many evenings on the homestead were spent playing guitar and mandolin duets.

Their marriage has been blessed with three daughters, Floto, Lucerne, and Bette. Ethel’s husband passed away 34 years ago, in 1945, and was buried here in this family site.

Ethel will always be remembered as an attractive, charming person, with a delight wit and sense of humor. She was a happy peaceful person, a comforting resource to friends and family.

Ethel made many friends. She responded with words of comfort and love to all. She shared her home with students who were unable to meet the cost of living in the school dormitory. She spent many devoted years in her daughter, Lucerne’s home, caring for her grandchildren, Bert and Shug, to whom she was a second parent.

Through the years, Ethel derived her love and strength from studying her Bible, which she had read through over 50 times. She was an active Sabbath School class teacher, a leader in the church Dorcas Society, and she also distributed a great amount of literature to those she met. Her ultimate concern was to help others to prepare themselves for the Second Coming of Jesus.

Ethel is survived by her three daughters, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, five nieces, nine great nieces, one great nephew, one sister-in-love, Lena See Miller, and one sister, Louise See Schmitt.

Memorial graveside services were held Sunday, April 22, 1979 at Maple Hill Cemetery, Osceola, Iowa with Elder Ron Boyce officiating.
