August 2018Rosella Carroll Beener, 99, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 11, 2018 with her family at her side.
Rosella Margaret Carroll was born March 7, 1919 in Booneville, Iowa to George and Annie (Aller) Carroll. She grew up in the Cumming, Iowa area where her father farmed. Her mother passed away when Rosella was only six years old so she was raised with the help of family members and had to assume responsibility at an early age. She attended Cumming school and high school in Van Meter, where she lived with an older couple helping with house work, and chores before and after school. She was a classmate of the infamous baseball player Bob Feller.
Following graduation, she entered Mercy School of Nursing, graduating in 1941 where she worked as a R.N., later meeting her future husband, Phil Beener, an ambulance driver for the ordinance plant. They were married in 1942 at St. Patrick’s Church, Irish Settlement. Phil went back into the Navy and she continued working and raising their first child. Later five other children were born of this union, and she became a “stay at home” mom, often saying she’d never know how many she’d have for breakfast Saturday morning following Friday night ballgames.
In 1968, they moved to an acreage in St. Marys, Iowa, where they were active in the community, church and St. Marys quilting club, which she served as president. Rosella resided in her home until November 2017 when she moved to an assisted living due to health reasons.
She lived a long, loving, caring life sustained by her faith and love for God and will be missed by many.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers, George, Vincent and Marvin; sister, Mary Schilperoort; son-in-laws, Bill Parker and Joe Green.
Rosella is survived by her six children, Margaret, Jim (Marilyn), Phillip (Myra), Patty Green, Jerry (Pennie), and Rose Parker; 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren (with 2 on the way).
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church or Suncrest Hospice.
