Harry Washington Kalbach, son of John J. Kalbach and Matilda Gates, was born near Winterset, Iowa, May 23, 1892. He passed away at Lutheran hospital, Des Moines, March 4, 1951, following a brief illness. He was of a family of four children. A sister died in childhood. His two brothers, John J. and Roy survives.

In his childhood Harry moved with his parents to a farm home in the Penn Center community where he grew to manhood and attended the schools there. As a young man he operated a farm for his mother. In 1918 he answered the call of his country to serve in France during and after World War I. Returning home, he farmed until 1922. On account of ill health he, with his mother, moved to Dexter, where he entered the oil business as service station manager, later taking over the tank wagon business for the Black Hawk Oil company.

On June 18, 1925, he and Mary L. McKee were united in marriage at Greenfield. To this union were born five children: Barbara Jean, Gerald Dornan, Harry Jr., Mary Gretchen and Sarah Elizabeth. Mary Gretchen passed away in infancy and Gerald Dorman at the age of nine years.

In 1926 Harry Kalbach built his own bulk storage plant in Dexter, together with service station, which he operated until he sold it in 1928. He then operated a radio shop there for several years. In 1933 he built a bulk storage plant in Menlo, from which he serviced the surrounding territory. In 1933 he built and moved into the home which his family now occupies. In 1934 he built the Service Station which he operated until 1948 when he leased the oil business. He then returned to farming where he found great pleasure in raising purebred hogs.

Harry was interested and active in all civic and community affairs. He served two terms on the Menlo Town Council.

Those who remain to mourn his passing are his widow, Mary; three children, Barbara Jean Zanders, Harry Jr., who is now in Service, stationed at San Diego, Calif., and Sarah Elizabeth at home. One grandchildren, Andree Lee Zanders, two brothers, John J. and Roy, several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held March 7, at the Menlo Methodist Church, Rev. Everett H. Staats, officiating. Burial was in Dexter cemetery in charge of Glover-Buttler American Legion Post No. 511.

Pallbearers were Ed Delaney, Paul Fett, Fred Morford, Gerald Maline, Ellwyn Cox and Ralph Leff.

Flowers were in charge of Alma Buttler, Inez Craven, Josie Bond and Gladys Thornburg.
