Eddie Kirkpatrick, age 74, died Saturday, May 9th at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Friday, at New Virginia Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to his family.

Eddie Kirkpatrick

Eddie Ellsworth Kirkpatrick, son of Elvis Van Kirkpatrick and Fern Marie (Tracy) Kirkpatrick, was born Dec. 24, 1934, in Winterset. He passed from this life Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines, at 74 years of age.

Eddie grew up in the Winterset and New Virginia area. He worked at Solar Aircraft for several years with his father. He has lived most of his adult life in Des Moines. He was an auto mechanic and had his own carpet installation crews in Des Moines. His love was working on cars. He owned the New Virginia Phillips 66 Station for many years. When he move to Des Moines he operated many service stations, when they were still “full service”. He enjoyed racing and usually raced the number 66 at local tracks. While in his prime, at the young age of 50, he became the five time National Champion of the Thunder Truck Division-IMCA while still managing other drivers who raced the cars he built.

Eddie had a great love for his family and was a very proud American. He enjoyed family gatherings, playing cards, singing and he would play his harmonica and accordion. He had his own talk show on the Iowa Concerned Citizen Network in Des Moines, called “Bits and Pieces”. He enjoyed the “2 cents worth” section of the paper, commenting back and forth with people.

Those relatives who preceded Eddie in death were his parents; son, Bradley B. Kirkpatrick, brothers, Vernon Kirkpatrick and Elvis Kirkpatrick Jr., son-in-law, Steven Clinton.

He leaves to cherish his memory, May E. Davis his loving, life companion, daughter, Penny Clinton of Centerview, Mo.; son, Josh Kirkpatrick (Rhonda) of Des Moines; daughter Heidi Kirkpatrick of Des Moines; grandchildren, Jacob (Missy), Justin, Autumn (Neil), Timberly, Mallaki, Miss Eddie, Cassie, Drakke, Dominick, Kelsy, Jolyn and Cane, great-grandchildren, Skyler, Spencer, Savannah, Triston, Austin and Corbin, brothers, Dale Kirkpatrick (Kyle) of Palmer, Neb., Ronnie Kirkpatrick (Marilyn) of New Virginia; sisters, Delores Prather of Bellflower, Calif.; Aletha House (Fred) of Martensdale, Ladonna Smith (Terry) of Winterset; Bonnie Smith (David) of New Virginia; sister-in-law, Judy Kirkpatrick of New Virginia; Leona Kirkpatrick, mother of Heidi and Josh of Des Moines; Valena Spragg (Ron), mother of Bradley and Penny, of Osceola; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Graveside services were held at the New Virginia Cemetery, Friday, May 15, 2009, with Rev. Phillip Kramer officiating.
