Death Call by Paralytic Stroke

On Friday afternoon, August 14th, Mr. Louis Vaudt, father of the genial and prosperous Vaudt brothers of our community, was summoned to eternity by a paralytic stroke. The old gentleman drove to the August Vaudt home to visit with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong, who are here from Van Meter, Iowa. When he had arrived there he complained of feeling somewhat depressed, but after taking a lunch he felt good.

A short time after lunch he went out into the yard. When he did not return to the house as soon as usual, Mrs. August Vaudt was alarmed and went out to look for him. She found him at the smoke house, sunk to the ground dead. Heart failure had brought a long and energetic and Christian life to a sudden end.

Mr. L. Vaudt was the son of Carl Vaudt and Christine, nee Meier. He was born at Holtzhausen in the province of Westfalen, Germany on September the 27th in the year 1838. He attended the parochial school at his native place and was confirmed March 15th in the year 1853 by Rev. Lemke. In November 1855 he migrated to the United States and settled at Wartburg, Ills. Here he met Miss Wilhelmine Kahre who became his wife on February the 22nd, 1863. From this union issued eight children of which 3 died in infancy. In August 1876 he left Wartburg and moved to Dexter, Iowa. There he lived until the year 1885 when he left and settled on a farm near Van Meter, Iowa. Here his beloved wife died on February 13th, 1899. In 1911 Mr. Vaudt bought the former Wallace farm here and settled there with his four sons in the Spring of 1913.

Mr. Vaudt was an intelligent and well informed scholar of the bible, an upright Christian character and an energetic and prosperous farmer and citizen of our country. Deceased arrived at the high mark of 75 years, 10 months and 17 days. His survivors are two sisters in Germany, four sons: William, August, Albert and Herman of Whittemore and one daughter, Mrs. Armstrong, of Van Meter, Iowa; also 22 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

The funeral services too place Monday, August 17th at the Lutheran church of this place, Rev. W. Faulstich officiating and the remains were laid to rest at St. Paul’s Lutheran cemetery. A large concourse of mourners followed the hearse in honor of the old gentleman. The pall bearers were the Messrs. Christ Siemens, Charles Bell, Henry Meyer, Henry F. Bell, Louis Braatz and Henry Krohnberg.

May the life of this Christian father, this devout Lutheran and this friendly neighbor remain as an influential example to his children and all those who have made his acquaintance.

The following parties from out of town were here in attendance at the funeral:
J. R. Armstrong, wife and family of Van Meter, Iowa
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kahre of Wolsey, South Dakota.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Boehmer of Dexter, Iowa.
Mrs. Anna Kuyper of Van Meter, Ia.
Mrs. C. Fundinger of Van Meter, Ia.
