Melvin L. Hawn was born at Seymour, Iowa, June 3, 1869 and passed away July 3, 1952 at the hospital in Guthrie Center following a stroke on May 28, at the age of 83 years and 1 month.

His early life was spent in Madison county, moving to Greene county in 1909 where he lived until he moved to Guthrie county in 1940, residing here until the time of his death.

He was married to Luella Orton, August 19, 1893. No children were born to this union, but they adopted five children and reared them as their own. Mr. Hawn had become a member of the Methodist church in early life and remained true to that faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife Luella on October 24, 1945, also a brother Luther, a sister Sina and his parents.

Left to mourn are his five children, Ralph of Pupillion, Nebraska, Douglas of Glendale, California, Mrs. Frank Redinger (Mae) of Topeka, Kansas, Jack of Downey, California and Rex of Des Moines, Iowa; a sister, Mrs. Asa Spangle of Ventura, California, and a brother, Fred of Arnolds Park, Iowa; also eight grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Jennings Funeral Home with the Rev. O. L. Allison, a former pastor of the Panora Methodist church in charge.

Burial was in the West cemetery. Mrs. Davis Alexander and Mrs. Bert Kerr sang “In The Garden,” and “Beyond The Sunset,” with Mrs. Ruth Robinson playing the piano accompaniments. Casket bearers were Carl Batschelet, John Hodges, Roy Hodges, Clarence Reves, Fred Bauer and C. I. Wells.
