Herbert Leigh Smith, oldest child of George Z. and Ida Smith, was born near Macksburg in Madison County, Ia., on March 16, 1894, and died at his home in Panora on Feb. 27, 1959.

He graduated from the Winterset high school in 1913. He graduated from Iowa State college as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1919.

He moved to Panora, Iowa, where he has lived and practiced more than 37 years.

On August 18, 1928, he was married to Gladys Madren of Panora. They had one son, Sherwood.

Dr. Smith was a member of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Assn., a mason in Winterset, the Acacia Fraternity, Eastern Star at Panora, an American Legion, and a member of the Methodist church.

He was devoted to his parents, to his family and to his profession, which he practiced until the day of his death.

He is survived by his wife, his son Sherwood of Iowa City, a brother George M. of Fremont, Nebraska, a sister, Mrs. H. O. Roe of Lafayette, Calif., and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Panora on Sunday, March 1, with Rev. Leroy Moore officiating. Burial was at the Prairie Center cemetery.
