Died, June 5th, at the home of his sister, Mrs. Palmer, near Barney, Madison county, Mr. Monroe Smith, aged thirty-three years. The deceased was born and raised in the county in which he died. That dread disease, consumption, claimed him as its victim, and the last two years of his life were filled with patient suffering. Mr. Smith was the youngest son of Ira and Sallie Smith, and brother of David Smith of Osceola. He leaves three brothers and one sister, his parents and one sister and a brother having preceded him to the better world.

Coordinator's note: First name taken from gravestone. Per this obituary, he died in Madison County but as to his birth, both the 1885 Iowa State Census and his Clarke County, Iowa Marriage Record state that he was born in Clarke County.
