New VirginiaMurray folks were grief stricken last Friday when they learned of the death of W. H. Roberts who died at the Sells Hospital at Osceola, having only been ill a few days. Seems all was done that could be done to save his life, but the end came Friday morning.
At the time of his death he was 71 years, 7 months and 2 days of age. He was born in Mahaska county, later moving to Madison county, where he resided for a number of years.
There he was united in marriage to Margrett Guthrie who preceded him in death about nineteen months ago.
Mr. Roberts was for many years a member of the school board, also a member of the town council and a charter member of the I.O.O.F., at whose funeral they paid their last sad rites.
No children came to the Roberts home, but an adopted daughter, Mrs. Flossie Wolf, who was loved and cherished as an own child. Other relatives are four grandchildren and two nephews, Wm. Hollingshead and B. F. Roberts, and a host of friends to grieve his departure.
Billy, as he was commonly called, has lived in and near Murray for many years, and was found a good neighbor and a true friend. Though he is gone we miss him.
Funeral services were held from the Christian church Sunday at 2:30 in charge of Undertaker Ryan. Rev. Karracker and Rev. Hesseltine officiating. The music was furnished by a male quartet made up from the different churches. The floral offerings were beautiful. The body was laid to rest beside his wife in the Murray cemetery. So ends the life of one that will be missed.
Transcriber’s note: First name taken from gravestone at Murray, Iowa cemetery.
