Opal Irene Mullen, daughter of John Wetzel and Stella May Neidt, was born December 29, 1896 in Madison county, Iowa and departed this life September 7, 1968 at the Clarke County Hospital at the age of 71 years, 8 months and 8 days.

She received her education in Madison and Clarke county schools, having moved to Clarke county at an early age and spending the remainder of her life there.

She was united in marriage to Clifford C. Mullen, March 18, 1914 at Osceola, Iowa. Two daughters were born to this union and she raised their nieces and two nephews as her own children.

She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Clifford C.; two daughters, Mrs. Wanda M. Freeberg, Truro, Iowa and Mrs. Fonda Lee Olderog, Council Bluffs, Iowa; the nieces and nephews she raised, LeRoy Jeffers at home, Ruby Rork, Ft. Dodge; Mable Ransom, WIlmont, Minnesota. Also four sisters, Mrs. Lois Lowe, Osceola; Mrs. Daisy Smith, Comanche; Mrs. Iva Sinn, Des Moines; Mrs. Marie Pearson, Leon and two brothers, Paul Neidt, Osceola; and Marvin Neidt, Waterloo; four grandchildren, Mrs. Karilee Watson, Iowa City; Mrs. Johnna Ekleberry, Davenport; Robert Freeberg, U.S.A.F. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, one sister, Ruby; one brother, Dale R., a grandson, Kevin Scott Olderog, and her niece Daisynell Clark.

Opal was a helpful companion, loving mother and grandmother. She was a person who lived a life of dedication to others, always giving freely of herself and expecting nothing in return. She was like a mother to the nieces and nephews, she raised and was the closing link for her brothers and sisters after their parents were gone. She will be greatly missed by everyone who had the good fortune to know her.

Funeral services were held from Webster Funeral Home Wednesday, September 11 at 2 p.m. with Rev. John Dale and Rev. Charles Miller officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill cemetery, Osceola.
