Burial Rites Here For Romie Sparks

Former Resident of Clarke County Dies of Heart Ailment

Burial services were held in Osceola’s Maple Hill cemetery Saturday afternoon for Romie Owen Sparks, 61-year-old former Clarke county resident and brother of Lexie Sparks of Osceola, who died Wednesday, April 4, at his farm home near St. Charles. He had suffered a heart ailment for about a year but had been active until the fatal attack.

Funeral services were held that afternoon at the St. Charles Methodist church with Rev. W. C. Trembly, pastor, officiating.

The son of Benjamin and Jennie Edwards Sparks, he was born Sept. 12, 1900, in Green county, Indiana. He came to Clarke county as a boy with his parents and grew to manhood here.

On Jan. 24, 1924, he was united in marriage with Zelpha Bonney at Davenport and they were the parents of five children.

For the past 16 years, Mr. Sparks had been a resident of Madison county and was employed as a foreman at the Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel plant in Des Moines.

Surviving are his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Joyce Lathum of Des Moines; three sons, Robert of Big Springs, Nebr., Dale of Albuquerque, N.M., and Ronald at home; one sister, Mrs. Carrie Ryan of Nevada; two brothers, Lexie of Osceola and Kenneth of St. Augustine, Ill. He was preceded in death by a son, James, at the age of seven years, and a brother and sister.
