Wayne "Shorty" Strawn

Wayne "Shorty" Lester Strawn, son of Charles Strawn and Jessie May (Martin) was born December 28, 1928 in St. Charles, Iowa and passed from this life Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Kavanagh on 56th at 89 years of age.

Shorty received his education in St. Charles, Iowa and graduated from the St. Charles High School in 1946 and later attended Iowa State Teachers College.

He was united in marriage to Sallie (Johnson) Strawn on April 15, 1948 at Hamburg, Iowa and four children blessed this union of 69 years.

Wayne worked for John Deere in Ankeny for over thirty years as an assembler and inspector, retiring in 1987. A lifetime resident of St. Charles, Shorty was very involved in his community. He was a member of Model Lodge A.F. & A.M. serving as District Lecturer for the Grand Lodge and Model Chapter #174 Order of The Eastern Star serving 30 years as Worthy Patron. He also was a member of the I-35 School Board for 2 years during the time of consolidation, a South Township Trustee for many years and he even found time to drive a School Bus for fifteen years.

Shorty was the type of man who could without a doubt visit with anyone. He enjoyed sitting outside shelling nuts and visiting with the neighbors as they passed by. In addition, he also enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, camping, dancing, puzzles and of course riding his four wheeler around the farm he loved.

Those relatives who preceded Shorty in death were his parents, Jessie and Charles; brothers, Ronald and wife Wilma, Ralph "Red" and wife Dorothy, John and wife Northa, Dale and wife Rosemary; sister, Shirley and husband Nick Nichols and brother-in-law, Kenneth McDonald.

Wayne leaves to cherish his memory; wife, Sallie Strawn of Altoona, IA; children, Thomas (Eilene) Strawn of Mitchellville, IA, Jerry (Diane) Strawn of Iowa City, IA, Kent (Cyndie) Strawn of Norwalk, IA and daughter, Pam (Matthew) Helgeson of Altoona, IA. He is also survived by his eleven grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren; sister, Wilmarie McDonald of St. Charles, IA; very special friend, Mary Austin of St. Charles, IA as well as a "shipload" of nieces, nephews other relatives and many many friends.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Charles Parish Church or HCI Kavanaugh House on 56th.
