Lewis Jacobs, a highly esteemed resident of Murray, died in an Osceola hospital, April 8, 1949, following a lingering illness. His age was 71 years, 8 months, 3 days.

The son of the late Nicholas and Susan Jacobs, he was born on Aug. 5, 1877, one of a family of 9 children, three daughters, 6 sons. His birth was in Polk county, Iowa, two miles south of Ankeny.

He lived at the place of his birth until he was 16, at which time he accompanied his parents to Texas. Following a two-year sojourn there, he lived in Oklahoma, then moved to Madison county, Iowa, where he lived until about seven years ago when he came to Clarke county.

Throughout his life, he followed the occupation of farming, a career that was marked with industry and success, at a time when farming involved much greater struggle than now.

On July 25, 1898, he was united in marriage to Jessie Hurt. Two children were born to this union; a daughter, May, who died at about eight months of age; a son who died in infancy. Their home was characterized by mutual congeniality and devotion and diffused a Christian atmosphere to all who witnessed their life together. Last July they celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage.

At the age of 49 Mr. Jacobs experience Christian conversion and received baptism in the Church of Christ in the fiftieth anniversary of his birth. About a year ago, he and Mrs. Jacobs transferred their membership to the Methodist church of Murray. Through his long period of suffering, he manifested marvelous patience and fortitude. When confronted with the reality of death, he experienced a growing confidence in the redemptive grace of the heavenly Father.

Besides his bereaved wife, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. D. P. Bennett, of Waco, Texas, seven nieces and seven nephews.

Funeral service was held in the Methodist Church, Murray, Monday afternoon, April 11, with the Rev. R. W. Underwood, a former minister, officiating, assisted by the present minister, Rev. K. E. Nesbitt. Music was by a quartet: Mrs. Dean Galvin, Mrs. A. L. Clevenger, Clarence Wetzel and Aaron Miller, accompanied by Mrs. C. W. Arnold. Burial was in the Lorimor Cemetery. The Watt Funeral Service in charge.
