Mrs. Stevens’ Rites Set For Thursday

Funeral services for Mrs. John Stevens, 908 North Fifth avenue, who died Monday at the Evangelical Deaconess hospital, will be held Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Pursel funeral home in charge of Rev. P. G. Dennis. Burial will be in Riverside.

Mrs. Stevens had been in poor health for the past three years and a patient in the hospital for two weeks. Death was caused by a complication of diseases.

She was born in Waukee, June 24, 1886, the daughter of Lewis and Sarah Ann Hartley. When she was 5 years old the family moved to Madison county for two years and then to Van Meter. She was married, July 29, 1906, to John Stevens in Des Moines. They continued to live in Van Meter for two more years then moved to various places in Iowa, living in Boone county for 25 years. They came to this city last spring.

They were the parents of seven children. One daughter, Eva, died in 1931. Surviving are the widower, four daughters and two sons, Mrs. Ralph Bishop of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Wendell Watson, Mrs. Emma Sobole, and Miss Alice G. Stevens, all of this city, Glenn L. Stevens, navy carpenter’s mate third class, and Pvt. Gene C. Stevens, both in the south Pacific.

Mrs. Stevens was one of 12 children. Surviving brothers and a sister are Reese Hartley of Berkley, H. S. Hartley of this city, Jim Hartley of Perry and Mrs. Jack Johnson of Van Meter. She is also survived by seven grandchildren.
