Page 1, Column 3David Franklin Hurst was born at Virden, Illinois, February 23, 1860, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Doyle Roby, near Truro, Iowa, July 26, 1921, aged 61 years, 5 months and 3 days.
In the spring of 1880 he came from Virden, Illinois, to Madison county, Iowa with his widowed mother, Mrs. Louisa C. Hughes and two younger children, Mary and John Hughes, and settled on a farm near St. Charles, Iowa.
In the spring of 1887 he came to New Virginia, Iowa, and was employed as station agent for the C. B. and Q. R. R. for nearly twenty years.
On May 25, 1893, he was united in marriage to Miss Ida Thomas, and has ever since made his home in New Virginia.
To this union four children were born, Verne Franklin, of Chicago, Mrs. Wilma Louise Roby, Truro, Iowa, Harry James of Chicago, and Mildred Gertrude, of New Virginia, Iowa, who with the wife and mother, are left to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. He also leaves three brothers, James W. Hurst, of Virden, Ill., Jake L. Hurst, of Winterset, Iowa, who were present at his funeral, and John S. Hughes, of Los Angeles, Cal., and one sister, Mrs. Mary Jesse, of Chatham, Ill., and a host of other relatives and friends.
His mother, Mrs. Louisa C. Hughes, to whom he was a devoted son, passed away at her home here in New Virginia, in September, 1905.
He was a good neighbor always ready to lend a helping hand in times when needed. He was a lover of his home and children and here he will be greatly missed.
Mr. Hurst’s death was due to a stroke of apoplexy and he never regained consciousness from the time he was stricken. Medical aid and loving hands did all that could be done, but to no avail, and he quietly went to sleep.
The body was brought to his home here in New Virginia, Tuesday afternoon, July 26th, and the funeral was held from the Methodist church, Thursday, July 28th at 10:30 conducted by Rev. J. O. Carder, and the body laid to rest in the beautiful New Virginia cemetery.
