BURNED TO DEATH

L. D. Houlette, Son of Robert Houlette Formerly of This City Loses Life by Gas Explosion

Died at the Soldiers Sanitarium, Hot Springs, South Dakota, October 16, 1910, Lemon D. Houlette, aged 29 years, 2 months and 10 days. He was born near St. Charles, Madison county, Iowa, August 6, 1881, and has lived in that county and Warren county until about six years ago when he joined the army and served 3 years and 9 months, making the trip to the Philippines and back.

On December 17, 1907, he was united in marriage to Miss Marie Peterson at Helena, Montana, going from there to Nebraska, living there one year. They then moved to Oelricks, South Dakota, where he has been living on a claim. It was near this claim he was operating a gasoline plow and spilled gas on his clothes. In a few moments later struck a match to light his pipe when the gas exploded burning him severely. On the following day he was taken to the Sanitarium at Hot Springs. Here he received the tenderest care from his loving wife and many friends, and despite all that skilled and loving hands could, the soul passed to Him who gave it at 7 a.m. Sunday.

He left to mourn his loss his loving wife, father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Houlette, and two brothers of Frona, Texas, Walter Houlette, Hot Springs, Mo., John Houlette, Indianola, Iowa, Agnes Cottingham, Milestone, Canada, M. A. Houlette of New Virginia, Iowa. Also a host of other relatives and friends. He was buried under military honors at the soldiers cemetery at Hot Springs, South Dakota.---The New Virginian
