DEATH TAKES A PROMINENT CITIZEN

J. L. Browne died at his home on East Salem Avenue, this city at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, July 4th, 1911. His last illness has dated from over a year ago, during which time everything has been done to find relief, but the malignant disease had fastened itself upon him with a firm grasp and death brought relief from the suffering which he has patiently undergone. A little over a year ago, the first attack of the disease came upon him. He went to the Mayo hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, where he was operated upon in the hopes that the disease could be checked. The operation was partially successful, and he came home and spent a few weeks here before going to San Antonio, Texas, where he spent the winter. He gradually became worse and returned home again in the spring. He rallied again after he had returned home but the attacks came again, and life slipped away.

James L. Browne was born in Ligonier Valley, Pennsylvania, in 1857. His father died while he was quite young, but he remained here until he was eighteen years of age when he came to Madison county, Iowa. He attended Simpson college and taught several terms of school and then entered into the mercantile business with his uncle, Capt. J. M. Browne, of this city. After being associated with him for some time, he started a bank. This was successful and he gathered about him some of this world’s goods.

On the 25th of October, 1882, he was joined in wedlock with Miss Hattie Lindsey, daughter of the Hon. Samuel Lindsey. To this union two children were born, both of whom survive. They are Harry L. and Ilo E.

In 1889 Mrs. Browne’s health failed and they moved to Minden, Nebraska in hopes that the change would be beneficial. But this change did not result in the recovery of health and they returned to this county, where Mrs. Browne died in May, 1890.

Mr. Browne was married the second time to Miss Nannie M. Graham of Pennsylvania on the 28th day of October, 1896. Mrs. Browne has been the constant attendant of her husband in his last illness and has done everything to allay the suffering that was his to bear.

Mr. Browne came to Indianola in the year 1892 and entered into the real estate, loan and insurance business, in which he was engaged until his last illness came upon him and he retired from business to use every possible means to break off the disease.

He was a safe, conservative business man. He had a large business as his acquaintance was large and his methods were above reproach. He met every obligation promptly and expected those with whom he had business relations to do likewise.

He is survived by his wife, his son and daughter, three brothers and three sisters and his uncle, Capt. J. M. Browne, of this city.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian church and was one of the church’s most generous and most faithful supporters. Every department of the church received his help and his encouragement.

The funeral services will be held from the home on East Salem Avenue on this Thursday evening, July 6th, 1911, at 6:30 o’clock and will be in charge of the Rev. E. E. Douglass, pastor of the United Presbyterian church of this city. The interment will be in the city cemetery.
