Fred Ogden rites held here Monday

Funeral services for Fred Ogden were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 22, at Central Christian Church, with the Rev. Clinton B. Meininger in charge.

Dr. J. K. Johnson sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Going Down the Valley,” accompanied by Mrs. Eldon Kinsman.

Casket bearers were Lawrence Saunders, Lawrence Hurst, Clarence Ogden, Jim Parr, Robert Deal and Otto Monthei. Burial was in the Jefferson cemetery.

Fred Ogden was born in Butler, Mo., Feb. 19, 1873, the son of A. L. and P. E. Brittin Ogden. At an early age he moved with his family to Leroy, Ill., where they continued to live for some years, before moving to Calhoun County, Iowa, where he grew up to young manhood. It was in this community that he met and married Sadie A. Woodbury on April 3, 1894.

Most of the married life of this couple, who had 66 years together, was spent on farms in various parts of Iowa. The last 45 years being in Greene County, and since 1939 they have lived in Jefferson.

Mr. and Mrs. Ogden became the parents of nine children, two of whom preceded him in death. Mrs. Ogden died Oct. 3, 1960. Those who survive are: Mrs. J. R. (Clara) Morris, Lakeside, Calif.; Mrs. Lee (Grace) Wadsworth, Mrs. Ben (Sadie) Crews, both of Jefferson; Mrs. Mabel Francis, Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. Ross (Mearl) Buihner, Springfield, Ore.; Mrs. Roy (Elsie) Monthei, Jefferson, and Verne Ogden, Sanborn. There are 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. The deceased were Flora who died in infancy and Glen who died in January, 1939.

Mr. Ogden was a member of Central Christian Church.

Coordinator's note: Although not appearing in a Madison County Federal Census, Madison County Birth Records show that they had 5 of their 9 children in Madison County starting in 1898 through 1907. A newspaper article in December 1908 claimed that they planned to move to Greene County in March of 1909.
