Mamie Elizabeth Jones was born March 20, 1871, in Madison County, near Dexter, Iowa to Francis and Barbara Jones. She attended country school near the place of her birth, and later graduated from Dexter Normal School. She taught school for several years and accumulated many friends.

On December 30, 1906, she was united in marriage to Frank Ellsworth Hammer. To this union, one son, Doyle, was born January 28, 1909. In 1920 the family moved from the farm south of Dexter to Des Moines, Iowa.

Mrs. Hammer was most happy when she was serving members of her family and unfortunately lived her life perhaps even too devotedly to this cause. She was a member of the Methodist Church, and also a member of the Rebekah Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away September 7, 1935. Mrs. Hammers’ health failed rapidly after her husband’s death and she went to the home of her son in Davenport, Iowa, where at nine o’clock a.m., February 10, 1936 she passed away in St. Luke’s hospital, the result of her lingering ill health.

Mrs. Hammer was a woman of courage who devotedly served her family and made many friends in spite of her handicap.

She is survived by one son, Doyle Hammer, Davenport, Iowa; one step-son, Burtis F. Hammer, Des Moines, Iowa; one step-daughter, Mrs. Edna Kliss, Des Moines, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Fred Fuller, Dexter, Iowa, and Mrs. Lovinia Mapes, Redfield, Iowa; three brothers, Eugene Jones, Hartford, South Dakota, Clarence F. Jones, Dexter, Iowa, and Elmer Jones, Earlham, Iowa; two granddaughters Miss Maxine Kliss and Miss Jean Hammer, both of Des Moines, and many other relatives, friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from Linn’s Funeral parlor, conducted by Rev. Mounty of Des Moines, assisted by Rev. Hempstead, of Stuart.
