Samuel Potts Low, son of Samuel and Malinda (Fox) Low, was born in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Ind., August 5, 1853. He passed away at his home in Stuart, Iowa, October 27, 1936.

In 1857, when he was four years of age, he came with his parents to Madison Co., Iowa, settling on a farm 12 miles west of Winterset. Here he grew to young manhood having a part in the various activities that contributed to the pioneer life of that day. He was eager for education and made use of the few opportunities of schooling that came his way. He enjoyed attending the “Singing School” and all through his life enjoyed singing hymns.

June 15, 1876, he was united in marriage to Clara J. Choate, also of Madison County. They started their new home on a farm 7 ˝ miles southwest of Stuart, which Mr. Low bought and improved, and where they spent forty years of their married life.

Shortly after establishing their home he and his wife united with the Louck’s Grove Christian church where they worshipped many years.

About 20 years ago he retired from the farm and moved to Stuart and hence transferred his church membership to the Stuart Congregational church. Here he found pleasure in worship and served as deacon until his health prevented his further attendance. The church then appointed him honorary deacon for the remainder of his life.

Mr. Low was the father of five children. They are Frank A. Low, Dexter; Mrs. Ida Thulin, Stuart; Mrs. Mabel Coffman, Menlo; Mrs. Cora Mallatt, Beaman, Iowa; Percy A. Low, Menlo.

His passing at the advanced age of 83 years came after a period of three years of invalidism which was borne with remarkable fortitude and cheerfulness. His wife was his faithful companion and nurse during all the months he was confined to his home, never leaving his bedside, so to speak. He loved company and there were many happy family gatherings in their home which cheered him greatly.

Besides his wife and children, those who mourn his departure are his two brothers, Thomas J. Low, Stuart, and Ephraim Low, Winterset. (Three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death several years ago). He also leaves many nephews and nieces, 21 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon at the Congregational church, conducted by the present pastor, Rev. Eugene Myers, and by Rev. Alex E. Cutler, a former pastor.

A quartet consisting of Mr. Bert Russell, Mrs. Boyd Lemar, Mrs. Eugene Myers and Mr. Clyde Lawson, assisted by Mrs. Smull at the organ sang. The casket bearers were his grandsons. The remains were laid to rest in the South Oak Grove cemetery.

Besides the relatives and friends from nearby towns who attended the last rites, those coming from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Mallatt, Beaman, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Doane, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Rhode, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Harrah and Mrs. Max Proffitt, Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. Virgil McCammant of Montezuma; Mr. an Mrs. Ephraim Low, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Low, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Low, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Platt, Mrs. Marne Jacobs, Mrs. Daisy Low, Winterset; Mr. and Mrs. John Alcorn, Earlham.
