Rachel Holderbaum, daughter of Henry D. and Christina Holderbaum, was born in Beman, Indiana, October 28, 1868, and passed away at the clinic hospital in Dexter, Iowa July 25, 1937, aged 68 years, 8 months and 27 days. She was the oldest child in a family of 12 children, eight of whom including the father and mother, have preceded her in death.

In the spring of 1870, her parents moved to Iowa, settling on a farm in Madison County, Penn township, three miles southeast of Dexter. Here she grew to womanhood and with the exception of a few years residence in Dexter, spent the whole of her life on the homestead farm.

Miss Holderbaum was a Christian woman. In her life she was confirmed in the German Lutheran church and later transferred her membership to the Presbyterian church of Dexter, remaining in the faith till death. Rachel was devoted to her church and the cause of her Lord. She attended the church services as often as she was able to do so.

In large measure did she translate into her life the teachings of the Master, so that all who knew her could bear testimony that she had been with Jesus and had learned of Him. Hers, too, was a life of service, constantly thinking of and doing for those about her.

She is survived by two sisters: Mrs. Carolina Amanda Thrailkill and Mrs. Cora Thornton and one brother, J. A. Holderbaum, all of Dexter, besides other relatives and a great company of friends.
