Pfc. Claire Leroy Fett, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lou Fett, was born January 11, 1928, and departed this life June 2, 1951 at the age of 23 years, 4 months and 19 days. Claire was born on a farm south of Dexter in Madison County, Iowa, where he lived with his parents until the Spring of 1937, at which time the family moved to a farm south of Menlo, Iowa, where they lived for two years. After that the family purchased their farm south of Casey, Iowa, where Claire resided until he was drafted into the Armed Services on December 4, 1950.

The departed was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. He completed his schooling in the Menlo high school, graduating with the class of 1946. After graduating from high school Claire took over the responsibilities of farming on account of his fathers health and death.

In September 1950, he was called to the Colors of his country, received a deferment, and on December 4, 1950, he left from Greenfield, Iowa, for Fort Sheridan, Illinois. From Fort Sheridan he was sent to Fort Hood, Texas, where he was subject to a call for active duty in Company “B” Tank Division. Having receive a weekend leave he and three buddies from Iowa chartered a private pane to make a trip home. While enroute the plane crashed in Oklahoma, bringing death to all occupants.

He is preceded in death by his father. Left to mourn his departure are: his mother, Mrs. Bertha Fett of Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Verain Jones; three brothers, Howard of San Pablo, California; Maurice of Venice, California; Dale of Des Moines, Iowa; four nieces, two nephews, and a host of relatives and friends. In loving memory of Pfc. Clair Leroy Fett a memorial has been presented to the Armed Service Commission to the Lutheran church-Missouri Synod by the Ladies Aid Society of St. John’s Lutheran church at Casey, Iowa.
