Harvey Allen Schmidt, son of William and Lydia Beam Schmidt was born at Millersburg, Holmes County, Ohio, Sept. 8, 1871. When he was two years old the family came to Penn township, Madison county where he received his rural school education, followed by a term at Dexter Normal and a year at Walnut.

He was married March 16, 1898 to Cora Belle Arnold, also of Penn township, who preceded him in death Sept. 10, 1947. To this union two children were born, Mrs. Ralph Reed (Gladys) of Casey, and Charles Leland of Griswold.

In 1911, Mr. Schmidt with his wife and daughter moved from the Dexter community to a farm west of Menlo where they resided until the time of semi-retirement from farming in 1924. Always a farmer at heart-he was always interested in the production of the soil. In recent years he was never happier than when working in his garden.

On Nov. 22, 1949, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Louise Wall, formerly of Riceville, Iowa, who has been a devoted companion through his last years and who so devotedly watched his decline through the past illness.

A little more than two weeks ago he suffered a cerebral hemhorrage from which he gradually failed and our Heavenly Father took him to his rest at 7:15 p.m. Sept. 29, 1959 at the Dexter Clinic at the age of 88 years and 21 days.

Besides his wife and two children and their companions, he leaves six grandchildren: Betty Reed Law of Menlo, Ronald Reed of Dexter, Paul Reed of DePere, Wisc., Robert Reed of Lincoln, Nebr., Coleen and Christ Schmidt of Griswold, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Tillie Hain of Stuart, a step-daughter, Mrs. Nita Minnis and her husband SFC LaVerne Minnis and their sons, Larry, Garry, and Ronnie, stationed in Japan, also many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Memorial service was held Friday at 2:00 at Bufkin Funeral home. Rev. Wendell of the Congregational church conducted the service. Music was furnished by Mrs. John Guthrey at the organ and a vocal solo by Rev. Wendell. Mrs. Wilbur Earhart and Mrs. Clifton Ellis had charge of flowers. Bearers were John Guthrey, Holmes Jones, Fred Delahoyde, Leslie Secrest, Bert Winn, and Howard Christensen. Interment was in the South Oak Grove cemetery in Stuart.
