Joseph John Schmidt, oldest son of William and Lydia Schmidt, was born near Winesburg, Holmes Co., Ohio, Oct. 27, 1859, and passed from this life at the Whitaker nursing home in Stuart, Iowa, Dec. 20, 1944, at the age of 85 years, 1 month and 24 days.

At the age of 13 he came with his parents to Madison County where they settled on a farm 6 miles south of Dexter, Iowa. After he grew to manhood he engaged in farming in Adair County, Iowa, till 1910 when he retired and came to Stuart where he has since resided.

He leaves to mourn his passing five brothers, George of Stuart, Ia., Edward of Lakeport, Calif., Harvey of Menlo and Frank and Rube of Atlantic; also three sisters, Mrs. Amanda Fredricks, of Parker, S. D., Mrs. Ida Thompson and Mrs. Tillie Hain of Stuart. Three brothers, Henry, of Middletown, Calif., Wm. of Chicago, Ill., and Fred, of Stuart and one sister, Mrs. Mary Fink, of Stuart have preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Linn Funeral Hoe conducted by Rev. Reed Kessler.

Pallbearers were Raymond Boyle, Albert Lovell, Geo. Fink, Earl, Glen and Leland Schmidt.

Interment was made in the South Oak Grove cemetery.
