Dropped Dead

Wm. Schmidt dropped dead at the home of his son-in-law, Jacob Fink, southeast of town, Tuesday. Mr. Schmidt was a retired farmer who has been living in Stuart for a number of years. He had been out at his son-in-law’s several days and helping a little in the work about the place. He had been feeling as well as usual and in answer to one of his grandchildren said he felt just like working. At noon when called for dinner and while washing his face he fell over and died without a struggle. Funeral services were held at the Christian church yesterday at two o’clock.

Obituary

William Schmidt was born in Holmes county, Ohio, April 10, 1832, and died in Madison county, Iowa, September 30, 1913, at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 20 days. He was married in Holmes county, Ohio, fourteen children being born to this union, one of which died in infancy. They are: Joseph J. Schmidt, Geo. H. Schmidt, Stuart, Ia.; Henry Schmidt, Middletown, Calif.; Edward Schmidt, Oakland, Calif.; Fred Schmidt, Menlo, Ia.; Frank Schmidt, Atlantic, Ia.; Harve Schmidt, Menlo, Ia.; Willie Schmidt, Blue Island, Ill.; Reuben Schmidt, Marne, Ia.; Mrs. Amanda Fredericks, Red Oak, Ia.; Mrs. Mary Fink, Dexter, Ia.; Mrs. Ida White and Mrs. Tillie Hain, Stuart, Ia. All were present at the funeral except Edward and Henry.

Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt remained in Ohio until the spring of seventy-three, when they moved to Madison county, Iowa, locating on a farm six miles south of Dexter. The spring of 1877 they moved to Stuart and resided here until his death. His wife preceded him to that Better Land four years ago last January. He was raised and belonged to the Reformed Lutheran church until he moved to Iowa and then he kept no membership with any church.
