Elmer R., son of Michael and Julie Baker Athey, was born in Greene County, Iowa on February 5, 1895 and passed away at the Madison County Memorial Hospital on May 16, 1979, in Winterset, Iowa.

In the early 1900’s he was united in marriage to Ida Beuerman and five children were born to this union. They lived in Lawrence, Kansas, where he was employed as a custodian at the University of Kansas. In 1939 Elmer moved to Stuart where he spent the remainder of his life.

Besides fishing, Elmer enjoyed doing carpenter work.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife, an infant daughter, four brothers and four sisters.

Surviving are his children Paul Athey and Mrs. Floyd (Pearl) Grant of Lawrence, Kansas, Mrs. Raymond (Ruby) Newton of Baldwin, Kansas, and Mrs. Harold (Rosabelle) Rinehart of Topeka, Kansas; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Graveside services were conducted Friday, May 18, 1979 at the Greenfield Cemetery in Greenfield, Iowa with the Rev. George Thurman officiating.
