Page 4, Column 6Harley David was born to David Marion and Sara Elizabeth (Hamm) Duff on July 3, 1903 in Guthrie County, Iowa. He passed away September 23, 1984 at Pleasant Care Center in Pleasantville, Iowa.
On July 6, 1921 he was united in marriage to Edna Allena (Downing) Irwin. After their marriage they lived in Adair, Audubon and Union counties, moving to Stuart in 1928 where they lived for 16 years. In 1944 they moved to the rural Dexter area and in 1948 to the Earlham rural area where they lived 26 years.
Harley farmed most of his life except for a few years during the Depression and World War II when he worked at various construction jobs.
For many years Harley was an active member of the Dexter Odd Fellow Lodge. During his years of membership he sat in all of the governing body chairs and was a Past Noble Grand. Besides his lodge work he enjoyed gardening, fishing and all sports.
Upon the sale of their farm in 1974, due to poor health, they moved to DeSoto, Iowa where he lived until he went to the Pleasant Care Center in August of 1982.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers and sisters and his wife of 61 years, Edna.
Surviving are four sons, Dwight Irwin of Stuart, LeRoy of Pleasantville, Iowa, Darrell of Des Moines, Iowa and Richard of Adel, Iowa; three daughters, Mrs. G. F. (Zada) Kennedy of Havre De Grace, Maryland, Mrs. Robert G. (Ulva) Clark of Adel, Iowa, Mrs. Leo (Joan) Petro of Carlisle, Iowa; one sister, Ada Wray of San Diego, California; 19 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild, plus a host of relatives and friends.
Rev. Mary Johnston officiate at the funeral service on September 25, 1984 at the Stuart-Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Stuart, Iowa. Vocal music was provided by Robert Lawson, accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Debbie Wilson. Caring for the floral tributes were Mrs. Floyd Holmes and Mrs. Lloyd McClurg. Casket bearers were Kenneth Sage, Harry Skaggs, Harold Mobley, Bill Young, Merlin Greene and Elvin Greene. Interment was in Morrisburg Cemetery, Guthrie County, Iowa.
